Padraig Harrington has been named as a vice-captain of the European Ryder Cup team as they seek to defend the trophy at Adare Manor next year.
The three-time major winner was announced as one of Luke Donald’s vice-captains as the hosts go in search of a third victory on the trot, a feat they previously achieved at the K Club in 2006 and Gleneagles in 2014.

“It’s something I didn’t expect,” Harrington said. “I honestly didn’t think I’d ever wear the European Ryder Cup logo again. So I’m very happy to be part of it.
“The Ryder Cup has been a special part of my life. Representing Europe has always been one of the highlights of my golfing career and to be able to do it again in this situation, especially in Ireland, is special.”
Donald added: “He brings a wealth of experience and I do love the fact that there’s a connection. He understands the Irish crowds and all that goes with having a Ryder Cup in Ireland. I think it’s going to be very special for him.”
The Dubliner, who turns 55 next month, has just enjoyed another stellar season on the Champions Tour, winning the US Senior Open for the third time and the second year in a row.
Harrington captained the European side in their heavy defeat to USA at Whistling Straits in 2021, a match which was delayed by a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic and where visiting fans were not permitted to travel due to restrictions.
He played in six successive Ryder Cups between 1999 and 2010, finishing on the winning side four times.
Harrington previously served as one of Paul McGinley’s vice-captains for Europe’s victory over USA in 2014.
The Limerick venue is the second Irish course to host the Ryder Cup after the K Club in 2006.
