St. John’s men’s basketball associate head coach Steve Masiello will assume a new role as the program’s general manager, insider Adam Zagoria first reported.
The veteran collegiate coach will continue to serve as the associate head coach to Rick Pitino.
The change comes after St. John’s parted ways with former general manager Matt Abdelmassih in January. Tom Ostrom was named interim general manager but left the team in June after helping finalize their roster for the upcoming season, per Zagoria.
Masiello took over the general manager responsibilities following the departure and the program decided to add an assistant coach rather than look for another general manager.
Peyton Silva has emerged as a leading candidate for the assistant coaching job, as he holds the same position at Louisville. He also has a relationship with Pitino, being one of his former Cardinals players from 2009-13.
Masiello came to Queens in 2023, bringing more than 20 years of experience at the Division 1 level. In three seasons under his and Pitino’s guidance, the Red Storm went 81-25 en-route to winning consecutive Big East regular-season and tournament titles and reaching the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
Masiello played a key role in helping the Johnnies create the nation’s top transfer class in 2025, receiving commitments from future NBA prospects Bryce Hopkins, Dillon Mitchell and Oziyah Sellers.
Before coming to Queens, he was the head coach at Manhattan College, leading the program to consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) titles and two NCAA tournament appearances. He also served as a key member of Pitino’s coaching staff at Iona and Louisville.
