A US politician has urged Taiwan to approve a drone spending proposal, warning that “time is short” for the island democracy as it faces the threat of a potential Chinese attack.
“Time is short, and the faster a comprehensive drone bill can pass, the better,” Republican Young Kim said during a visit to Taipei by a bipartisan congressional delegation.
It came as US President Donald Trump has declared a “complete disarmament” deal has been reached in Gaza.
The news was announced on Truth Social, and it appears the White House and Mr Trump’s Board of Peace expect Hamas could sign the agreement within days.
It would mean the devastated Gaza Strip could soon be disamed and demilitarised.
Meanwhile, Poland is reeling after what it says “looks like” a Russian missile crashed within its territory, hours after Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Donald Trump in the US.
The cruise missile gouged a 10 metre crater deep inside the NATO member’s borders after Vladimir Putin unleashed long-range attacks on western Ukraine, close to Poland.
Polish PM Donald Tusk said the Russian weapon had crashed into a field amid Ukraine attack but he said there was “no reason” to think Poland was the intended target.
Nonetheless, it is a worrying development and the first time a Russian missile has exploded within NATO.
NATO said it would “continue to take all necessary measures to defend (the alliance’s) territory”.
Meanwhile, the US military said it has hit dozens of targets, including military command centres and missile facilities in Iran, during a “heavy wave of strikes”.
But the conflict appears to spreading further with drone strikes recorded at an Egyptian port. It’s the first time since hostilities began that Egypt has been targeted.
