“I’m superhuman most of the time, but I’m also human a lot of the time. I make mistakes, and that’s OK.”

Beacroft, 19, won gold with a time of 38:45.51, beating out Kenya’s Stephen Ndangiri Kihu (38:46.57) in a tense final lap.

“I knew he’d be there waiting for me to kick because he was taunting me the entire race, telling me to go around and lead it,” Beacroft said.

“I was just saying, ‘in your dreams, champ, this is not happening today’.

“I knew he’d come back around me and then as soon as he did I thought I’d really drop the hammer and see if I could break him, and I did.”

It came after Aussie cyclists Felicity Wilson-Haffenden and Sophie Edwards were disqualified in the track cycling women’s individual pursuit due to equipment violations.

Wilson-Haffenden was disqualified due to taping of her shoulder that resulted in “morphological change,” while the call on Edwards came due to excessive padding of her helmet.

Two hours after the qualification, AusCycling released a statement expressing disappointment.

“We are extremely disappointed by the commissaires’ decision to disqualify Felicity Wilson-Haffenden and Sophie Edwards from the track cycling women’s individual pursuit today in Glasgow,” the statement read.

“This morning, Felicity was seen by the medical team after experiencing discomfort in her shoulders, of which she experiences routine discomfort. The medical team applied strapping tape to her shoulders to alleviate this discomfort.

“After Felicity’s qualifying heat, in which she recorded a time that qualified her for the bronze medal final, the commissaires concluded that the taping of her shoulder constituted a “morphological change”, although they did not articulate the reasons for their conclusion.

“Separately, Sophie Edwards was disqualified after commissaires ruled that the amount of padding in her helmet was excessive.

“No issues were raised with the team’s equipment or clothing after inspection by officials in yesterday’s women’s team pursuit.

“These are extremely disappointing outcomes for both of our athletes and our full support is with them as the competition continues.”

In other results, Sarah Billings claimed Bronze in the women’s 800m and became the first Aussie to win a medal in the event at the Commonwealth Games since 1990.

Billings came in third behind England’s Georgia Hunter Bell (1:59.51) in first and Kenya’s Lilian Odira (2:00.58) in second.
