The Detroit Pistons are facing one of the biggest decisions of the offseason regarding Jalen Duren’s future. And one blockbuster trade proposal could completely change the direction of the franchise.

Heavy.com’s Adil Ahmed recently suggested a three-team trade idea that would send future Hall of Famer Kevin Durant to the Pistons, with All-Star center Jalen Duren heading to the Brooklyn Nets. The proposed deal looks like this:

The proposal is centered around Duren’s ongoing contract standoff with the Pistons.

The 22-year-old center is coming off the best season of his career, averaging 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists while shooting 65.0% from the field. He earned his first All-NBA selection, which made him eligible for a five-year, $287 million supermax contract extension.

That has created a major dilemma for the Pistons. Despite Duren’s outstanding regular season, the Pistons are not ready to offer him a supermax contract, given his recent struggles in the playoffs.

Duren averaged 10.5 points and 8.1 rebounds while shooting 51.4% from the field in the postseason, and his struggles were viewed as one of the reasons the Pistons lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round despite finishing as the No. 1 seed with 60 wins.

The Pistons want to keep Duren long-term, but the two sides remain far apart in contract negotiations. Detroit has also shut down sign-and-trade discussions as it continues negotiating with Duren. However, reports suggest Duren still wants a massive contract, and some have even suggested he could accept his one-year qualifying offer before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2027.

The Pistons are doing everything they can to keep Duren, but if negotiations continue to stall, proposals like this could become more realistic.

 

The Pistons Would Add One Of The Greatest Scorers Ever

From Detroit’s perspective, this trade could be an intriguing option. In this scenario, the Pistons would significantly strengthen their chances of becoming championship contenders in the Eastern Conference.

Kevin Durant remains one of the NBA’s elite scorers even at 37 years old. Last season, the two-time Finals MVP averaged 26.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists while shooting 52.0% from the field and 41.3% from three-point range.

He also earned his 12th All-Star selection and 16th All-NBA honor. Durant’s two-year, $90 million extension begins next season, with him set to earn $43.9 million in 2026-27 before holding a $46 million player option for the following season.

Pairing Durant with Cade Cunningham would immediately give Detroit one of the most dangerous star duos in the East. Durant has also praised Cunningham’s game on several occasions over the past few years.

The Pistons would also receive veteran center Clint Capela, who averaged 3.6 points and 4.6 rebounds while shooting 52.0% from the field last season. Capela is entering the second year of his three-year, $21.1 million contract and will earn roughly $7 million next season.

 

The Nets Would Get Their Center For The Future

The Nets would take a different approach in this proposal. Brooklyn would move on from Michael Porter Jr., who is coming off the best season of his career. Porter averaged 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists while shooting 46.3% from the field and 36.3% from three-point range.

He is entering the final season of his five-year, $179.2 million contract, where he will earn $40.8 million, and is eligible for a four-year, $234 million extension. The Nets and Porter remain engaged in contract discussions, but reports suggest the franchise is in no rush to reach an agreement.

Instead of committing to another expensive extension, Brooklyn could acquire an All-Star center in Duren and lock down its franchise center for years to come after previously trading Nic Claxton.

 

This Is Not A Bad Return For The Rockets

The Houston Rockets would also receive long-term value. Houston would land Porter as an immediate offensive replacement for Durant while also acquiring young forward Ron Holland II.

Holland averaged 8.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.2 assists while shooting 43.2% from the field during his second NBA season. He remains on his rookie contract, where he will earn about $9 million next season, with a team option worth $11.9 million for the 2027-28 season.

Along with three first-round picks, the Rockets would receive enough assets to remain competitive while maintaining long-term flexibility.

 

This Deal Actually Makes Sense For All Three Teams

Ultimately, this proposal depends entirely on whether the Pistons believe they can reach a long-term agreement with Duren.  If they decide that moving on from their 22-year-old All-NBA center is the best option, this trade could offer an interesting alternative.

Detroit would pair Kevin Durant with franchise cornerstone Cade Cunningham and immediately emerge as one of the strongest teams in the Eastern Conference.

Brooklyn would secure its long-term answer at center in Duren, while Houston would remain competitive, add a proven scorer, and strengthen its collection of draft assets for future moves.

If the Jalen Duren contract negotiations continue to stall, swapping Duren for one of the greatest scorers in NBA history is not a bad option for the Pistons
