Police have warned hikers to be prepared after three men had to be rescued from a NSW National Park in bad weather.

The three men, aged 27, 35, and 36 sent an ‘emergency message’ at 3.45pm on Friday saying they were stranded by severe snowy weather in Kosciuszko National Park.

The trio took shelter at Derschkos Hut in the Jagungal Wilderness Area, around 70 kilometres north of Jindabyne.

A search involving Riverina Police, NSW SES Alpine Search and Rescue volunteers and the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service was launched.

Rescue crews reached the hut at 10.20 pm, where the hikers were found safe.

NSW Police have issued a stark warning to anyone going walking in the alpine regions.

Hikers should carry enough food, water, first aid supplies, along with clothing appropriate for cold and wet weather.

Authorities also recommend checking forecasts before heading off and continuing to monitor conditions throughout a trip. Do not plan a hike if severe weather is expected.

Hikers should register their bushwalking trip with NSW National Parks, carry a personal locator beacon, and always stick to their intended route.

It’s also important to tell a family member or friend when they plan to return so they can call police in an emergency.

Kosciuszko National Park spans roughly 690,000 hectares in New South Wales, and is the state’s largest national park.

NSW SES data shows a bumper 2025 snow season led to a record 25 search and rescue missions for its alpine unit, compared to just four callouts the year before.
