On Aug. 8, 1992, USA Basketball beat Croatia 117–85 to secure the gold medal in Barcelona. Known as the “Dream Team,” Team USA had put on a spectacle all summer long, showing the world just how dominant they were. How could it not be? Eleven out of 12 squad members were future Hall of Famers. And yet, one man—and his shoes—stood out from the pack: Michael Jordan and the Air Jordan 7 “Olympic.”
Debuted at the tournament, the sneaker broke from traditional Air Jordan conventions. It abandoned Chicago Bulls-inspired hues for a patriotic “White/Midnight Navy/True Red” color palette. Elsewhere, Tinker Hatfield’s fifth signature shoe design for MJ featured the number “9” on the spine instead of “23” given that Jordan wore the single-digit for his USA jersey.
It’s been 34 years since “His Airness” and the rest of the Dream Team took home gold medals in Barcelona. Since then, the legend of the “Olympic” 7 has only grown thanks to its considered design, on-court performance, and subsequent story-driven retros.
