According to Callum Twomey, Collingwood have made a lucrative offer to the superstar midfielder.
It is understood the Pies are prepared to offer Butters $1.8 million a year.
While he could put pen to paper on an eight-year contract, making the Collingwood’s $14.4m proposal a club record.
The Pies have created space in their salary cap by getting rid of Bobby Hill only last month.
However it remains to be seen if their pursuit of Butters will affect a move for Lachie Neale.
The former Brisbane Lions captain visited Collingwood HQ prior to a defeat to Carlton earlier this month.
Like Butters, he is off contract this year and attracting interest from the AFL’s biggest clubs.
Butters reportedly has an even more lucrative offer from Richmond to consider.

While Geelong and Western Bulldogs are also targeting the Port Adelaide star.
Collingwood chief executive Craig Kelly confirmed the club was considering a move for Butters.
“We’d be negligent not to be (helping list manager) Justin Leppitsch and his team, with support from both the board and ourselves, talking to anyone, and Zak’s definitely one of those players,” Kelly said.
”(Butters is) a great player, a great person, and he’s coming back to Victoria and we’d like him to consider our club.”
