Anthony Albanese says his move to legislate AI regulatory standards could become a global model and that he will discuss his approach in detail with world leaders next month in New York.
The prime minister said AI was too important to be addressed piecemeal and that providing leadership now, rather than waiting for problems to emerge, was critical.
The comments came during an exclusive interview with Capital Brief late Monday at the prime minister’s official residence in Canberra.
Albanese, who does not personally use AI, delivered a major speech at the University of Sydney last month in which he said he would take control of his government’s approach to the emerging technology by centralising policy in a new Office of AI within his department.
