Melbourne commuters faced major public transport delays and bumper-to-bumper traffic on a busy main road after a truck became stuck under a rail overpass.

An oversized truck travelling along Punt Road in Richmond, east of the CBD, became trapped after attempting to pass under the rail bridge about 9.30am on Tuesday.

Traffic slowed to a crawl after the truck became stuck under the rail overpass. Supplied

Two northbound lanes on Punt Road past Swan Street were closed as emergency crews attempt to dislodge the truck.

There were significant traffic delays of over an hour in the area, according to Vic Traffic.

Emergency services remain on the scene.

Similar disruptions are impacting services on the Alamein, Belgrave, Glen Waverley and Lilydale lines on Melbourne’s metro train network.

The incident also resulted in train delays and cancellations. Supplied

“Some trains may remain stationary for extended periods at platforms or between platforms,” Metro Trains said in a post on X.

“Select services may terminate/originate at intermediate locations.”
