DICK Johnson Racing Supercars rookie Rylan Gray is raring to steer an old-school Ford at the reborn Apex Steel Muscle Car Masters.
The 19-year-old will drive his father Jeremy’s Capri in the Touring Car Masters class at the August 29-30 Sydney Motorsport Park event.
Gray is at SMP today testing the car, which he revealed has endured a wild journey.
“It was actually owned by the Miedecke family before us. They ran it in hillclimbs and it was actually upside down in a creek at one point and it had to get re-shelled,” he said in a video posted to social media.

“So it’s sort of the same car – in some ways it is.
“We’ve had it for probably two or three years now, Dad’s done some races in TCM on the Supercars calendar, so I thought I’d jump in and have a go at it.”
Gray Jr does have prior experience in the car, having made a cameo appearance in Touring Car Masters on the 2024 Sydney SuperNight support card.
“It’s pretty fun actually. Everything is really old in some ways, so everything moves around and you have got to hustle it a bit more, so it’s actually a lot of fun to drive,” he continued.
“It’s got a lot more grip than you would think these cars would have.
“It’s very different to a Supercar, to what I drive now, but it’s similar in a lot of ways as well.
“There’s going to be a big turnout I hope, there’s going to be a lot of cars out there, so hopefully we can be somewhere up the front and give it a win.”
Gray will have another Supercars race weekend aboard his #38 Shell V-Power Mustang before then, the Ipswich Super440 on August 21-23.
