Essendon interim coach Dean Solomon has swept away suggestions of a rift between him and head coach candidate Mark McVeigh, labelling the rumours “an episode of Home and Away”.

Suggestions of a “rift” between Solomon and potential coaching candidates McVeigh and James Hird were reported on Seven on Wednesday night, where it was speculated that if McVeigh were to be hired as the head coach, it could result in the exit of Solomon despite being contracted at the club for 2027.

When Solomon was asked about the rumours on Thursday morning, he said he “didn’t know where they have come from”.

“They’re obviously rumours, (McVeigh) has been one of my best mates since the age of 15,” Solomon said.

“I’ve known Hirdy since the age of 17, so I’m not sure (where they’re coming from).

“The talks of me potentially not being here next week, whether that’s stimulated a bit of those conversations, we weren’t sure.

“I feel like it’s a bit of an episode of Home and Away.”

He reiterated that the club go through a “thorough process” of vetting all four candidates which also include non-Essendon clubmen, Fremantle assistant Jaymie Graham and Adelaide assistant Murray Davis.

“It doesn’t need to be an Essendon person,” he said.

“I truly believe that it just needs to be the right person for the club.”

The interim coach dropped out of the race for the full-time gig after a horror run of results since taking over.

Solomon maintained his indecision surrounding his own future, claiming he’s still going through “the process”.

“My wife and kids live in northern NSW, so I’ve had 10 to 11 months away from them. Is that sustainable in the long term? It’s probably not,” Solomon said.

“The reality is a new coach is coming in two weeks’ time, they’re to want to bring in some staff that they want to work alongside for two, three years.

“I would have thought continuity is really important.

“So I’ll sit down with that senior coach, and we’ll work through that.”
