Finlay Tarling, a rider with the NSN Development team, has died following a crash on stage 8 of the Volta a Portugal, the race announced Friday. Tarling was 19.
The statement from the race read: “The organization of the 87th Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta Jogos Santa Casa deeply regrets to announce the passing of British cyclist Finlay Tarling, from the NSN Development Team, following a serious accident that occurred during the 8th stage of the race. In light of this tragic event, the race will be neutralized until reaching Fafe and, as a sign of respect and mourning, the podium ceremony scheduled for today will not take place.”
Tarling raced for Great Britain on the road and track alongside his brother Josh, who races for Netcompany-Ineos. The circumstances of the crash have not yet been confirmed by authorities or the race.
