Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream has once again refused to budge from the top of the Nintendo Switch eShop charts, holding the No. 1 all-formats spot for the week of August 15, 2026, according to the latest weekly tracking published by Nintendo Everything. The bigger story on this week’s chart, though, is a surprise new entry: The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition, which debuts at No. 16 overall and No. 3 on the download-only ranking just days after its shadow-drop launch.

The full top-12 all-formats ranking for the week has Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream in first, followed by Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Minecraft, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Party Jamboree, Pokemon FireRed, Nintendo Switch Sports, Rhythm Heaven Groove, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Pokemon Legends: Z-A and Pokemon Legends: Arceus, per the same weekly report.

Tomodachi Life’s Grip on the Chart Shows No Sign of Loosening

Nintendo’s Mii-driven life simulator has now spent months parked at the summit of the weekly eShop rankings, a run that stretches back through July and June without a single week lost, based on Nintendo Everything’s ongoing chart archive. At this point, it might take an unexpected big release or a notable sale to overthrow it.

The sustained popularity lines up with hard sales numbers Nintendo has already disclosed. Nintendo has confirmed that Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream has already sold over 8 million copies following its launch on 16th April 2026, with total sales exceeding 8 million as of 5th August 2026. Nintendo also described the game’s audience directly, stating “cumulative global sell-through has exceeded 8 million units, and it is being enjoyed by people of all ages, regardless of gender.” Circana analyst Mat Piscatella separately projected the title as the best-selling game in the US for April, reinforcing just how dominant its opening months were.

War in the North’s Legacy Edition Sneaks Onto the Chart Days After Launch

The week’s real talking point is the sudden chart appearance of The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition, a revamped version of Snowblind Studios’ 2011 action RPG. Publisher Aspyr caught fans off guard by announcing and releasing the game on the same day, with Nintendo Life reporting that the studio “announced and shadow-dropped The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition on Switch 1 & 2, reviving a 2011 curio for modern consoles” at a price of $19.99.

The North American and most global release landed on August 11, though Nintendo Wire and Gematsu both confirm European Switch and Switch 2 players had to wait a week longer. Gematsu noted the game “for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, Switch, and PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG)” is priced at “$19.99 / £18.99 / €23.99” and that “In Europe, the Switch 2 and Switch versions will launch on August 18.”

The re-release isn’t a straightforward remaster job. According to Nintendo Wire, the Legacy Edition adds “60 fps performance (except on Switch 1), local split-screen for two players (again, not on Switch 1), online co-op for three players, auto saves, extra save slots, and revamped enemy AI.” Aspyr, operating under license from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, also confirmed in its own press materials that this is “the first The Lord of the Rings title released by Aspyr,” and the publisher has already signalled that further LOTR revivals are on the way.

Physical Copies Confirmed via Limited Run Games

For collectors who prefer a cartridge over a download, Limited Run Games has already stepped in. Nintendo Life reported the distributor’s own announcement reading simply: “The Lord of the Rings: War in the North is coming to physical. The party is getting back together. More details to come.” Limited Run previously handled physical distribution for Aspyr’s Star Wars catalogue, so a similar arrangement for future LOTR re-releases looks likely.

Where the Rest of the Chart Sits, and What It Means Down Under

Below the top tier, the familiar cast of Nintendo evergreens continues to hold firm: Pokemon FireRed, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and both Pokemon Legends entries remain fixtures of the all-formats top 12, per Nintendo Everything’s weekly listing. On the download-only side, Pokemon FireRed and Pokemon LeafGreen continue to lead, with War in the North slotting in directly behind them at No. 3, ahead of long-runners like Deltarune and Stardew Valley.

For Australian and New Zealand players, the timing carries an extra wrinkle. Nintendo’s own pricing for both regions is due to shift shortly, with a wider Switch, Switch 2 and Switch Online price rise confirmed to begin “Australia and New Zealand starts on September 1st” according to price-tracking coverage of Nintendo’s regional announcement. That gives ANZ shoppers eyeing either the chart-topping Mii sim or the newly arrived Middle-earth brawler roughly a two-week window before regional eShop prices tick upward, on top of the discount Aspyr is already running on War in the North through August 24.

With no major first-party Switch release currently scheduled to challenge it, Tomodachi Life’s chart streak looks set to continue into the back half of August. The more interesting question for Nintendo watchers is whether Aspyr’s other promised Lord of the Rings revivals can carve out similar space on the download-only side once they start rolling out.
