On This Day in Boxing… August 18th
1979.- American Matthew Saad Muhammad made the first successful defense of his WBC light heavyweight title, defeating Britain’s John Conteh by unanimous decision in a memorable and grueling 15-round battle. The thrilling contest took place at the Convention Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
1984.- Legendary South Korean fighter Jung-Koo Chang successfully defended his WBC light flyweight title by knocking out tough Japanese challenger Katsuo Tokashiki in the ninth round. The action-packed bout took place at the Pohang Gymnasium in Pohang, South Korea.
1985.- In an all-Mexican clash of the highest caliber, the historic Guadalupe Pintor captured the WBC super bantamweight crown by dethroning Mexican-American champion Juan “Kid” Meza via 12-round unanimous decision, after sending him to the canvas twice. The fight took place before a packed crowd at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City.
2018.- Nicaragua’s Cristofer Rosales convincingly defended his WBC flyweight title, knocking out local idol Paddy Barnes of Ireland with a devastating body hook in the fourth round. The fight took place at Windsor Park in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
