You may have spotted a new patch on the side of baseball caps throughout MLB this weekend.

From August 21 through 23, Major League Baseball is recognizing MLB Players’ Weekend, which (among other things) involves all players, coaches, and managers across the league wearing the Players’ Weekend logo patch on the side of their caps. This is the sixth time the league has celebrated Players’ Weekend, though how they’ve done so has changed quite a bit from year to year.

Aside from that cap patch, teams are in their usual uniforms, as they have been since the event returned in 2024, which is a far cry from the original 2017-2019 version of Players’ Weekend, which gave us colourful Little League-style pullover uniforms with player nicknames on the back (remember Shane Bieber wearing “NOT JUSTIN” on his jersey?) and then, in 2019, head-to-toe monochromatic black or white uniforms. When the event returned in 2024, the special uniforms were gone and replaced with colourful player numbers on the side of each cap; what we’re seeing here in 2026 is by far the tamest of the Players’ Weekend uniforms.

One on-field element that’s being carried over is custom player equipment. For 2026, a record number of players (more than 400 of them) will use custom bat designs for the weekend, honouring hometowns/countries, family members, alma maters, nicknames, and charitable causes. Players also have the option to wear custom cleats, and as part of the league’s “El Béisbol es Otra Cosa” Latino cultural platform, custom batting gloves are being worn under the “Flow Mayor” banner.

Once the weekend wraps up, players can auction their custom bats and cleats off through MLB Auctions with proceeds going to charities of their choice.

MLB Network will air a Players’ Weekend Special on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. ET. The eight national broadcasts throughout the weekend (Apple TV, FOX, FS1, FOX One, NBC, Peacock, and ESPN) will also be highlighting player stories.

MLB Players’ Weekend in 2017 and 2018 gave us colourful pullover uniforms. It’s been regular unis since 2024.In 2019, every team either wore all-white or all-black uniforms for Players’ Weekend
