High school football player dies after in-game injury during first week of season
ALMA CENTER, Wis. (WKOW) — A high school football player has died after he got hurt during a game Thursday night. Adam Massman was entering his senior year at Alma Center Lincoln High School in Jackson County.
On Saturday, Drew Semingson, the superintendent for the Alma Center-Humbird-Merrillan School District, sent a message to district staff and families sharing the news of Massman’s death. Semingson said, after Massman got hurt, he received medical support from EMTs who were at the game. He was then taken to the hospital. Semingson said the district learned of his death Saturday afternoon.
“Adam was active in our Lincoln community, participating in multiple sports, clubs, and activities making friends everywhere he went,” Semingson said.
The district opened the high school building Saturday for students and families, and counselors were available to meet with students. Semingson said additional counseling support will be available starting at noon on Monday and throughout the day on Tuesday. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are set to be “jump start” days for students, and the district’s first day of school is scheduled for September 1.
Semingson said Massman’s death has a wide impact in the district, where several of his family members work. His mother is an elementary school counselor, his sibling attends is a student, an aunt and uncle are elementary school teachers and another uncle serves on the school board.
The Hornets’ game Thursday night was against Turtle Lake. Alma Center Lincoln won 42-18. The team is scheduled to play Cornell on Friday. Neither the school nor the WIAA has said if that game will still be played.
