MATT Stone Racing’s newest recruit has suffered a major setback courtesy of a frightening brake failure.

Freshly signed co-driver Harri Jones was left helpless as the #4 Sherrin Rentals Chevrolet went careering towards the barriers at Turn 6 shortly after the all-in Supercars test day’s resumption from lunch.

The car made left-side contact with the tyre wall and is expected to miss the remainder of today’s test.

“Basically I was just circulating, waiting to come back in and do another (driver change) rotation and I came into Turn 6 and had a full brake failure,” Jones told media.

“Pedal went to the floor, unfortunately didn’t slow down much and found the wall pretty hard at Turn 6.

“I reckon it has probably ended our day unfortunately, but the car can be fixed.

“We had a good morning, I’ve had a few laps to get back into the routine.

“Disappointed more than anything that I can’t get the rest of the afternoon in before The Bend, so it has definitely put us on the back foot but you live and you learn.

“This is motorsport. It’s disappointing but it happens… fortunately it was a tyre wall and not just straight concrete, but it’s still pretty substantial damage.”

Jones was a late call-up to partner finals contender Jack Le Brocq after Cameron Crick had to withdraw on health grounds. This will be the Porsche Carrera Cup star’s second Supercars enduro campaign following a run last year alongside Team 18’s Anton De Pasquale.

“It was f***ing terrifying, to be honest,” Jones continued of the shunt.

“I’ve never really had that happen before. I hope to have it not happen again. But at least we’re at a safe racetrack this weekend and there was a gravel trap, there was tyre walls. I’m fine.”

Whether the car will be repaired in time for tomorrow’s ride day remains to be seen.

“I jumped out and had a jump look around, and obviously it’s not pretty but it never is when you hit a wall,” he said.

“There’s a good team of people around us here that have had a whole weekend of hard work. I’m sure no one really wants to do another night of hard work but we’ll see. They are important things, these ride days, so hopefully we can get it out and get the partners and everyone enjoying the track tomorrow.”

Jones won both Carrera Cup races at QR over the weekend to extend his championship lead to 56 points, as he strives for a third title.
