Mining equipment rarely remains in its original configuration. Engines are rebuilt, hydraulic lines are rerouted, electrical systems are upgraded and attachments, guarding or new technology may be added.

These changes do not automatically mean the existing fire suppression system is no longer suitable. They do, however, require the fire risk assessment to be reviewed.

A modified hydraulic circuit may introduce a new fuel source near a hot surface. Additional guarding could affect the distribution of a suppression agent, while relocated components may change the areas requiring detection and protection.

Any material change to an asset should trigger a review of its fire risk assessment. If the review identifies new hazards, altered ignition sources or different protected risk areas, the fire suppression system configuration must then be reassessed and updated as required.

This may involve changes to detection routing, nozzle locations, agent quantity, cylinder capacity or shutdown functions. The assessment may confirm that the existing system remains appropriate.

Fire suppression should form part of the site’s broader management of change process. Engineering, maintenance and safety teams need to consider whether planned modifications alter the original fire risk assumptions before the asset returns to operation.

The principle is straightforward. When the asset changes, review the risk. When the risk changes, review the fire suppression system.

This disciplined approach helps ensure fire protection remains aligned with the machine throughout its life, supporting the safety of operators, equipment and production.
