Perez Hilton is now focusing on his mental health, following a disturbing livestream earlier this month where he appeared to harm himself.
Hilton’s brother-in-law, Tom, appeared on the latest episode of “The Perez Hilton Podcast with Chris Booker” and provided an update on Hilton’s well-being. He said the blogger, whose real name is Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr., is still in the hospital recovering from the physical injuries he suffered from the Aug. 4 livestream, which included broken bones from falling multiple times. Other physical injuries included cuts.
He said that Hilton was receiving treatment for these injuries up until 48 hours before recording the podcast.
“The cutting, a couple of falls that happened during this process,” he explained of the injuries sustained.
Tom, who is married to Hilton’s youngest sister Barbara Lavandeira, said the focus now will be transitioning into the mental side of things and making sure Hilton is not looking to harm himself again.
“Although, of course, while he’s in the hospital, while he’s being treated for his physical ailments, psychiatrists come in and check in and see how he’s doing and make sure he’s not looking to harm himself,” he explained.
Tom said it remains unclear as to what caused his mental break.
“The actual healing, or digging into what caused this mental break as I’ve called it, hasn’t been discovered,” he said. “I don’t know if it will ever be.”

On Aug. 8, the family said that Hilton had “experienced significant blood loss and sustained additional injuries that will require surgery in the coming days.” They said his treatment and recovery will be a long process. At the time, they said his condition “remains serious but stable.”
As of Aug. 17, the 48-year-old’s family said he remained hospitalized under Florida’s Baker Act “and is receiving the medical care he needs.”
Earlier this month, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputies responded to Hilton’s Miami home after receiving multiple calls about a person livestreaming acts of self-harm on the social media platform. Authorities located the residence and spoke with family members on scene and confirmed Hilton was alone inside. His TikTok account has since been banned.
His family later revealed that his three children, niece and sister were inside the home “minutes before the public livestream incident.” He has two daughters and a son.
“When it became clear that Perez was experiencing a severe mental health crisis and harming himself, they immediately fled to protect the children from witnessing any further trauma,” the statement explained. “Our highest priority right now is helping the children begin to heal from what they experienced. An important part of that process is allowing them to safely return home and begin rebuilding a sense of security and normalcy.”
Tom said that Hilton hasn’t seen his children since the incident and they aren’t allowed to visit him in the area he’s staying at the hospital.
The blogger’s mother, Teresita Lavandeira, was granted temporary custody of the children on Aug. 18 after filing for it three days after the incident, according to court documents obtained by TMZ.
The outlet said that Perez is allowed to visit his children as long as he obtains psychiatric clearance and a family member or a therapist is present.
