A fresh twist in the Rowan Marshall trade storyline has been revealed, with St Kilda eyeing a blockbuster trade move.

SAINTS TO MAKE ANOTHER BLOCKBUSTER DE KONING PLAY?

St Kilda is reportedly looking to reunite the De Koning brothers at Moorabbin, assuming Rowan Marshall requests a trade to Geelong — which is said to be “almost a certainty”.

According to Seven’s Mitch Cleary, if the contracted Marshall again looks to depart his current club, the Saints will target Cats hybrid Sam De Koning in a trade return.

St Kilda could utilise De Koning both as a second-ruck to brother Tom, who joined the club last year on an eight-year deal worth $1.7 million per season, but also as a key defender alongside Cal Wilkie and Jack Silvagni.

“In readiness for a (Marshall) trade request, if that comes again, the Saints want to try and pry Sam De Koning out of Geelong to bring him to Moorabbin to play with his brother,” Cleary revealed on Wednesday night.

“They had a crack a couple of years ago … he re-signed with the Cats.

“But the view from the Saints is if Marshall is to request a trade again, they don’t care about picks, they want players, and Sam De Koning is their man.”

Cleary added: “There’s been no inclination from Sam De Koning to this point that he’ll entertain this. He’s got a year to run at Geelong; he’s happy there, but the Saints have six weeks to get to work and try and change his mind.”

Fellow reporter Tom Morris chimed in: “My understanding is, and Geelong would never say this publicly, because they need to keep their bargaining power, but they would be open to the conversation if the deal was right coming back the other way.”

Regarding the ‘if’ surrounding the Marshall situation, Morris added: “I think there’s almost certainty that he wants to get out (of St Kilda).”

Going into coach Ross Lyon’s final year of his current contract, the Saints would more likely target ready-made players in a trade, instead of draft picks, having been to the draft.

RIVAL TARGETING YOUNG PIE

A young Magpie could be among the Collingwood departures at the end of the season.

After five senior games in 2024, four last year and five this year, 24-year-old Wil Parker could seek more opportunity elsewhere.

And according to AFL Media’s Josh Gabelich, Port Adelaide has “expressed interest” in the half-back flanker.

The Power have “tracked” Parker, a former cricketing prospect who joined Collingwood in 2024.

Parker’s uncle, Geoff Parker, happens to also be Port Adelaide’s national recruiting manager.

Port has been on the lookout for rival talent since Josh Carr got in the senior coaching chair, and Parker, who Gabelich reports hasn’t yet received a contract offer from Collingwood, looms as a gettable target.

The Power kickstarted their list overhaul on Monday, delisting Jackson Mead, Will Lorenz, Mani Liddy, Xavier Walsh, Benny Barrett and Jacob Moss.

FAMILIAR HINT SAINT COULD BE TRADED

At around this time last year, ex-St Kilda captain Jack Steele was told to consider his options elsewhere.

Then under contract, he was traded to Melbourne in the offseason for a third-round draft pick.

This year around, a similar situation reportedly confronts wingman Liam Henry, who’s struggled with injury and form since crossing over from Fremantle in 2023.

Henry, about to turn 25 years of age, played eight senior games this year for averages of 10.2 disposals, 2.9 marks and 2.0 tackles.

According to SEN’s Tom Morris, Henry — who’s under contract for another year — is a name to keep an eye on when the trade period gets underway in October.

“Liam Henry had his exit meeting in the last 48 hours at St Kilda — hasn’t been in the team all year at the Saints,”

“He was told in that exit meeting that St Kilda is willing to listen to offers for him … so, he’s one to watch in the trade period as well.”

Asked if there was any rival interest in Henry, Morris replied: “Not that I’m aware of, but that’s not to say that there’s not interest for him elsewhere.

“He’s a contracted player, so the Saints have all the power. Whether Henry will look at that, I’m not sure.

“But he is now aware that the Saints are willing to trade him for the right deal, which, ordinarily, those sort of things get done.

“That was the same messaging to Jack Steele last year, and they let him go for a third-rounder.”

Almost three years ago, the Saints dealt a second-round pick to Fremantle for the pacy winger.
