STAR CAPTAIN’S SHOCK REVEAL AFTER ESSENDON APPOINTS MCVEIGH

GWS star Toby Greene has revealed he will meet with newly appointed Essendon coach Mark McVeigh in the near future, as well as with Geelong as he weighs up his future.

Speaking on his weekly podcast with Rolln Media, the Giants captain revealed he would imminently meet with the Cats, who he has long been linked to, as well as the Dons’ new head coach.

The 32-year-old remains out of contract at the beginning of the Giants’ off-season, and while he genuinely remains torn on whether he stays at his club of 15 years, an opening has emerged that the red and black could take advantage of.

“I’ll start thinking about it (my future) properly over the next couple of weeks, and that’s what I said to the Giants yesterday (Tuesday) … I’ll work out family stuff and what we want to do,” Greene said on his podcast.

“I thought about it last week for the first time really; I sort of put it to the back of my mind the whole season. As much as people might find that hard to believe, that’s the truth.

“If I was definitely going, I’d say that now and be upfront to the Giants and make it easy for them … I’ll meet with probably Geelong this weekend, and ‘Spike’ (McVeigh) has reached out since he got the job. He asked if I could catch up, and I said I’d catch up with them … we’ll see how that goes.”

While the Cats are currently reported to have a three-year deal on the table, McVeigh previously coached Greene during his eight seasons as a coach in western Sydney.

GIANTS’ PLAY FOR STAR RUCK AFTER BIG MAN’S EXIT

GWS is reportedly exploring the idea of a trade for Western Bulldogs ruckman Tim English, less than 24 hours after the departure of tall Kieren Briggs.

The Herald Sun’s Ed Bourke revealed on Wednesday afternoon that are seeking Giants will “gauge” English’s interest in a move to New South Wales, despite being contracted to Whitten Oval until the end of 2029.

The report comes after his wife, professional netballer Rudi Ellis, departed the Melbourne Vixens last week to join the NSW Swifts last Saturday.

Any move would massively open the door for St Kilda ruck Rowan Marshall to seek a fresh start at the Bulldogs, with Luke Beveridge’s club reported by Foxfooty.com.au’s Will Faulkner to be a live chance of acquiring the Saint.

It comes after Foxfooty.com.au first revealed back in May that Marshall is expected to request a trade away from Moorabbin.

Veteran Giant Jesse Hogan was delisted on Tuesday evening after six years at the Giants, while Briggs is bound for Richmond’s Punt Road on a four-year deal as an unrestricted free agent.

Additionally, Jake Stringer has indicated his desire to return home to Victoria to leave another void that needs filling in Adam Kingsley’s forward line.

GWS is looking for top-end talent to add to its list after confirming the departures of Briggs and mercurial forwards Jesse Hogan and Jake Stringer.

SUNS ‘FRONT OF THE PACK’ FOR HOGAN, HAVE INTEREST IN HAWKS

Jesse Hogan looks on track to continue his AFL career at a fourth club, in a fourth state, with Gold Coast at the “front of the pack” to land the 2024 Coleman Medallist.

But he’s not the only player the Suns hold interest in, as they weigh up whether to accept Pick 7 as compensation for Ben King’s looming exit to Hawthorn.

Hogan was delisted by the Giants on Tuesday and has met with Collingwood and Carlton, but the Suns lead the race for his services according to AFL Media.

“He’s met with four clubs, three of which are Collingwood, Gold Coast and Carlton. The Blues do have interest in him; they’re taking a look but there are key forwards ahead of him in their list of priorities,” Cal Twomey said on Gettable.

“I’m not sure the Pies go there at this point. The Suns have maintained interest in him for some time and are looking for a mature key forward, and he basically comes for free now.

“I think he might also meet another couple of clubs in the process, too.”

Meanwhile the Suns must still decide whether to force a trade for King’s expected move to the Hawks and, potentially, interest in two young guns could become involved.

As it stands however their interest in young talls Aidan Schubert (pick 23 in 2025) and Noah Mraz (pick 35 in 2024) would be “separate”.

“They have interest in Aidan Schubert and Noah Mraz … I’m not saying they’re going to take up that interest, or that Hawthorn would let them, only that Gold Coast has interest,” Twomey said.

“If they got one of those players on board they could do a trade after doing the compensation (for King), that’d be separate.”

It would seem unlikely the Hawks would want to give up either Schubert or ‘Honeybuns’ given the impressive starts to their young careers.
