A woman is dead and a man known to her is in custody after her body was found in a Perth home.
The 28-year-old was found unresponsive with critical injuries at home on Taree Street in St James at about 8.30pm on Wednesday.
She was taken to Royal Perth Hospital, where she was declared dead.
The man assisting police with enquiries is a 38-year-old who knew the woman.
A nearby St James resident said criminal activity including break ins were common in the area.
Hassan Mahmoud was leaving for night shift work as a nurse when he noticed emergency vehicles on Wednesday night.

“I thought maybe like it’s the usual stuff because in this area like I have seen many suspicious people,” he said.
“There’s always something going on, so even in our house we had like six break-ins.”
He told The West Australian that it was unsettling to learn someone had died at the home.
“It’s shocking because I know that this area is not safe,” he said.
“After this incident, we have to think about moving somewhere because it’s actually not safe here.
“After that news, it’s shocking.”
Housemates residing in a home a few doors away from the crime scene said they didn’t hear anything, and had only saw police cars when they went outside to collect an Uber Eats order.
“We were watching a movie around 10 o’clock and when I came out, I saw police lights,” one said.
“I just had a sneak peek. . . I just took my food, went back in. We were watching a movie, so it was very loud.”
Homicide Squad detectives are continuing investigations and working to determine circumstances surrounding her death.
