George Miedecke will drive the Whiteline Racing Chevrolet Camaro SS at Muscle Car Masters.
The event has gone through various rebrands and took a brief hiatus through the COVID-19 pandemic, but this year returns to its roots.
Among the competitors are George Miedecke and his father Andrew Miedecke.
Andrew will be behind the wheel of his Group A-spec 1989 Ford Sierra RS Cosworth while George joins Whiteline Racing in its Chevrolet Camaro SS as part of the Touring Car Masters field.
TCM has enjoyed a massive uptick in entries for the Muscle Car Masters, with 31 cars from across Australia and New Zealand.
“It’s a great event, Muscle Car Masters. It’s cool to see it back. It was always something that had a huge spectator attendance and I’m excited to be part of it.
“I think it gets almost more than Supercars most years. I know that’s been off for a couple of years, so I’d say it’ll be big.
“It was big historically and it was always retro-focused. You see Group C and Group A cars, Sports Sedans and Touring Car Masters.
“It’s that very spectator-focused, accessible kind of event.
“The entry list for TCM is over 30 cars, which I don’t think they’ve had in recent memory, certainly not in the last five years.
“Everyone’s coming out of the woodwork because of the event. What a cool event it is.”
Miedecke hailed Touring Car Masters for its ability to bounce back after a downturn in recent years.
“I think that the appeal is still there from a competitive base end and from the punters as well,” he said.
“The spectators love watching them. TCM’s having a bit of a revival at the moment.
“They’re more flexible with their customer base, they’re accepting different cars from different championships and it’s proven to have a positive impact on the entry numbers.
“Clearly it’s being run well. It’s being run for the competitors and it’s having a good impact on participation.”
The Miedecke family has a close relationship with the Middletons, who own and operate Whiteline Racing.
Andrew Miedecke drove for Bob Middleton in AUSCAR in the early 2000s, winning two titles in a Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
The families have continued to compete together in Touring Car Masters.
George Miedecke said it was “too good of an opportunity to pass up” when Middleton offered him the chance to race at SMP.
“I really enjoy driving the cars there. I had my first TCM race win at Sydney,” he said.
“It’s helpful that GT4 is three weeks later at the same track as well.
“I’m excited to get back in. iIt’s a different driving style with pretty much twice the horsepower and half the tyre.”
Action gets underway on Saturday with 5.0-litre Touring car at 10:30am AEST.
Saturday coverage is live on Fox Sports 503 and Kayo Sports from 2:30pm. Coverage continues on Sunday at 1:00pm on Fox Sports 507 and Kayo Sports and SBS.
