On Saturday 23 August at exactly 4:06pm AEST, we welcome our next New Moon. This will be the final darkening of our skies for the Southern Hemisphere winter season, before September brings in the spring weather.

Coming to us in the Earth sign of Virgo, this New Moon will be a nourishing refresh. A chance to recalibrate as we enter the last few months of 2025. Keep reading to see what this New Moon will mean for you and why some people consider it a Black Moon.

Why is this a seasonal Black Moon?

Our August New Moon will be a seasonal Black Moon – which is the term given to the third New Moon in a four New Moon astrological season. Having four New Moons inside one astrological season (the period between an equinox and solstice) is quite rare. In fact, the next seasonal Black Moon isn’t until August 2028.

If you’re feeling confused, know that there is another way to define a Black Moon. And you’re probably more familiar with this definition. The second New Moon inside a calendar month is also called a Black Moon. This phenomenon is also rare, but less rare than a seasonal Black Moon. Seasonal Black Moons tend to occur once every 33 months, where as the other kind occur roughly every 29 months.

What to expect from the New Moon in Virgo?

New Moons are the point of reset in the Moon Cycle. This is the moment where the previous cycle comes to a close and a new one begins. Here, we are given the opportunity to shed the energy, emotions and themes that no longer serve us, so that we can start anew with a clean slate. It’s for this reason that New Moons are considered the best point during the Moon Cycle to manifest for the future. Intention-setting and positive thinking in this moment can grow into something larger and more prosperous.

Most people understand Virgo as the sign of perfectionism, organisation and criticism. But Virgo is also a nurturer. Deeply considerate of others, Virgo is not motivated by self interest. Instead, this sign is a “helper” and a “fixer”. As Co-Star calls it, they “put helping others over their own comfort.” It means this Moon will light up your desire to be part of a community. A deep sense of serenity can be found when you help and support the people around you.

This New Moon also inspires us to recalibrate and make space for ourselves. Both physically and mentally. If you’ve been putting off cleaning your spare room or taking your car to the car wash, here you’ll find the inspiration to clear your space. Because a clear space means a clear mind.

It also might be time for an emotional and mental cleanse. A moment to get back in touch with what really matters and perhaps literally touch grass. If you are the architect of your own stress, or you’re placing unrealistic expectations on yourself, it’s time to let that go. And if your mental discomfort is coming from an external source, it’s time to make some changes. Whether it’s leaving a job that’s overworking you, or taking some space from exhausting personalities, you will need to make some firm decisions in order to enter the rest of the year with a clear head.

Pay head to the Moon Uranus square and the Mars Jupiter Square

You will need to watch out for Uranus which is squaring off against the Moon at this time. This placement is erratic and can make us moody. You will need to learn not to take small things personally, and be mindful of the way your words can impact others.

On the other side of the sky, Jupiter is squaring Mars, which has the potential to cause drama. This is a very enthusiastic aspect, but also one that is impulsive and inspires risk taking. In other words, the polar opposite of the well-organised energy of Virgo. It creates a tension that pulls against the different sides of ourselves. While our emotional selves will crave specificity and order, our passionate selves will want spontaneity. It will be up to each of us to reconcile this inner tug-of-war, before it causes discontent and potentially more stress.
