The Avalanche and D Cale Makar have agreed to an eight-year contract worth $163.2M, the largest deal in NHL history. The deal carries a $20.4M annual cap hit and will begin with the 2027-28 season after Makar plays out the final year of his current six-year, $54M contract. The deal also includes a full no-movement clause and $127.6M in signing bonuses. The contract comes just ahead of the NHL’s new CBA, which takes effect Sept. 16. Sept. 15 will mark the “final day that a player can sign an eight-year contract with his current club” before the maximum drops to seven years (DENVER POST, 8/28). Makar is the NHL’s first $20M player (USA TODAY, 8/28).
