Having started the day three strokes ahead of Scottie Scheffler, Hovland finished three strokes behind the world number one.
The Norwegian’s two-over-par 72 meant that he finished in solo second, one shot ahead of third-place Ryan Gerard.
Hovland was understandably disappointed with his final-round performance and explained what cost him victory at East Lake.

Hovland is one of the most hard-working players on the PGA Tour and many believe he tinkers with his swing too much.
The 28-year-old is continually trying to find ways to improve, but he has lacked consistency throughout the past few seasons.
Hovland played really well in the first three rounds of this week’s Tour Championship but he could not close the deal.
He insists that he would have defeated Scottie Scheffler and won the tournament if he had his “normal game” on Sunday.
Hovland struggled a lot with his ball-striking in the final round, which made it extremely difficult for him to make birdies.

On another day, he would have carded a round in the 60s and won the Tour Championship, but it was not to be this time.
“Overall, week-wise, second place is a good showing,” Hovland said. “Obviously pretty disappointed with how I played today, just with the position that I was at.

“I only would have needed 1-under par to force a playoff. If I just had my normal game, my normal ball striking from the previous years, I think I take away this tournament.
“That’s obviously disappointing, but at the same time, it’s the way that I was able to have a chance to really win this event after being in some big holes throughout the season.
“I was able to battle myself out of it and win Travelers and then come back out here and almost win the whole thing.
“I kind of look at it as a huge positive, but at the same time, just a reminder of what I feel like I should have done.”
Hopefully, Hovland can finally settle on an improved swing over the winter and have an excellent 2027 PGA Tour season.
