Casualty fans will be treated to two big returns as the BBC’s medical drama celebrates its 40th anniversary with an eventful double bill this Saturday 5 September.
The BBC has released some first-look images of former Casualty stars George Rainsford and Derek Thompson returning to Holby City General as Ethan Hardy and Charlie Fairhead.
Thompson’s return as Charlie – a character he played for 38 years from the show’s first episode – marks the first time the actor reprises the role since 2024, while Rainsford was last seen as Ethan in 2023 after a nine-year stint on the series.

The double episode sees Holby thrown into chaos after “a high-stakes major incident”, the synopsis teases.
“Lives hang in the balance and the ED team are pushed to their limits in a tense and emotionally charged story that brings together some of the show’s most beloved character,” the synopsis also reads, hinting at the hospital staff needing all hands on deck to face this emergency.
While details of Ethan and Charlie’s return haven’t been disclosed just yet, the duo might be involved in the hospital action as the first-look images see Ethan wearing a stethoscope.
Previous spoilers about the episodes confirmed that a big firebomb incident at the neighbouring St James’ Hospital will have huge consequences for Holby ED as the staff looks to Dylan Keogh for guidance.
Series producer Liza Mellody assures fans are in for a “marvellous concoction” as she spoke about the appeal and longevity of the medical drama four decades since the first episode aired.

“Our characters are human – they are flawed but they do the best they can with what they have,” she said.
“We are telling human stories through the lens of medicine, adrenaline, warmth, joy, pain and ultimately hope. It is a marvellous concoction for Saturday night viewing.”
