Eltham coach Tim Bongetti is in a stable condition after being coward punched in the crowd on Sunday.
After playing in a NFNL Division 1 reserve grade semi-final for the Panthers, it is understood Bongetti was involved in an altercation in the Preston City Oval grandstand.
He was allegedly attacked while watching the senior match between Diamond Creek and Greensborough, knocked unconscious and hit his head on the concrete.
Police were called and the 37-year-old was taken by ambulance to Royal Melbourne Hospital with “upper body injuries”.
The people involved have been identified and investigations remain ongoing.
Eltham released a statement on Sunday night.
“We would like to provide a brief update and let everyone know that Tim is doing okay,” the club statement read.
“He is stable, responsive and surrounded by his family and those closest to him.
“Right now, our thoughts and support are with Tim and his family and we ask that their privacy is respected as they focus on him and his recovery.
“As this is a police matter, we are unable to provide any further comment or information at this time.
“We sincerely appreciate everyone who has reached out with their care, concern and support for Tim and his family.”
Just a few days ago, Bongetti had recommitted as Eltham coach for 2027.
The Panthers lost to Greensborough in the reserve grade match, Bongetti kicking one goal.
While Eltham coach, Bongetti is a Greensborough great having captained the club to the 2014 Division 1 premiership alongside current Borough coach Matt Hyde.
The Northern league said it was investigating and supporting Bongetti and his family.
“The NFNL strongly opposes all forms of violence and is reviewing the events at Preston City Oval on Sunday September 6,” a league statement said.
“The league is working with the parties involved and is providing support to the injured person, their family and their club.
“Given the incident is being investigated by police, the NFNL will not be making further comment at this time.”
