Collingwood has emerged as a contender to land Richmond’s Jayden Short as rivals eye moves for the battling side’s veteran stars.

Short, 30, is being viewed as gettable this trade period with Seven’s Mitch Cleary reporting on Wednesday night “there’s just a sense now among clubs that he is one that could have his head turned to leave Richmond”.

“He’s going to have the final say on that. If he’s happy at Richmond, he’ll stay there because he’s contracted,” he explained.

“But just put his name on the whiteboard, watch that for the next five weeks.”

SEN’s Sam Edmund believes the Magpies are one of those sides with interest with the Tigers to weigh up whether they can afford to cut even deeper in their rebuild.

“Gerard Whateley and I on Tuesday spent some time discussing two Richmond elder statesmen, so that being Jayden Short and Nick Vlastuin, and what Richmond might be inclined to do to potentially further fast-track this redevelopment,” Edmund said on Thursday.

“They’ve already got Pick 2 in this year’s draft. They previously drafted heavily, but this is the last crack at a pure draft, if you like, before Tassie come in.

“So, both Vlastuin and Short are obviously multiple premiership players, Richmond legends, both contracted for next year, but clubs are considering.

“Now when it comes to Jayden Short, one of those clubs is Collingwood. Now there’s been a consideration given to him by the Pies.

“Who knows where it goes, if it goes anywhere, but they’ve been on the front foot as we edge towards this exchange window, given Tim Membrey has re-signed, Ed Allan’s re-signed and we were speaking about Jesse Hogan there.

“Interesting to see what lever Richmond would pull here.”

AFL’S MESSAGE ON TRADES FOR BANNED SWANS

Rival clubs interested in acquiring members of Sydney’s ‘Pullman Five’ have been given a warning they’ll be doing so without clear knowledge of their futures.

Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, Nick Blakey, Riley Bice and James Jordon were all suspended for breaching the club’s expected behavioural standards.

While all players would likely have some level of external interest, in particular there’s a focus on Blakey, who has been left frustrated and has reportedly told associates he wants to be traded.

But as club officials met this week in Melbourne they were warned by the league itself the process will not be resolved in time for the trade period, which runs from October 5 to 14.

“AFL clubs exploring trades for any of the suspended Sydney players say they’ve been told by the league that their fate won’t be known before the end of the trade period,” SEN’s Sam Edmund tweeted.

“They say the message from the AFL is clear – buyer beware.”
