A man has been rushed to hospital after a shark attack in Western Australia’s Midwest.
The man was surfing at Glenfield Beach, north of Geraldton, about 430 kilometres north of Perth, this morning, when he was bitten by a shark about 9:45am.

St John Ambulance said the man, aged in his 50s, was taken to Geraldton Health Campus under priority one conditions.

A spokesperson for the WA Country Health Service (WACHS) said the man was in a serious but stable condition.
Officials removed a badly damaged surfboard from the scene, which is being tested to determine the species of shark involved.
Western Australia’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) said fisheries officials were working with local authorities to respond.

In a statement, Geraldton MP and Shadow Fisheries Minister Kirrilee Warr said she was seeking further details from authorities and the government.

“Our thoughts are with the victim, their family and the first responders involved in this incident,” Ms Warr said.
There have been two fatal shark attacks in Western Australia in 2026, with 38-year-old Perth man Steven Mattaboni killed while spearfishing off Rottnest Island in May.
In early June, 35-year-old diver Daniel Turpin, was killed by a suspected 4.5-metre shark near Michaelmas Island, off the coast of Albany.
