A multiple-time national champion, he twice challenged for world titles, falling short against Ernie Terrell in 1965 and the aforementioned Ali a year later. His career highlights include his 1965 Ring Magazine Fight of the Year against Patterson and a 1969 knockout of Jerry Quarry.
