Legendary commentator Martin Brundle says Fernando Alonso’s time in Formula One should come to an end this season, suggesting Aston Martin should look to the future.

Aston Martin was hoping to have an improved season this year under new team boss Adrian Newey but have fallen short of expectations, languishing in 10th in the constructors standings only ahead of Cadillac.

Alonso is 17th in the drivers championship while Lance Stroll is yet to score a championship point.

The 45-year-old Spanish veteran, who won two F1 championships in 2005 and 2006 with Renault, is believed to be considering his future in the sport with his contract expiring at the end of this season.

Speaking on the Sky Sports F1 podcast, Brundle said if he was running Aston Martin, he would change the driver line-up to have

“I love it in F1 at the moment. You’ve got now a 20-year-old Kimi Antonelli, and you can measure him against the greats like Fernando Alonso, like Lewis Hamilton in their 40s, and it’s brilliant to have that range across the grid,” Brundle said.

“I can’t help but think if I was running Aston Martin – and this will go down really well – they are rebuilding that team. They’re building for the future. Adrian Newey is at the drawing board relentlessly. I’d be inclined to get a couple of mid 25-year-olds and rebuild the driving line-up as well.”

Alonso holds the all-time record for the most F1 race starts, with Lewis Hamilton second on the list.

Brundle added: “Yeah. I told you it wouldn’t go down well. That is how I see where they’re at the moment.”

Nico Rosberg, the 2016 F1 world champion, chimed in: “So big news here. Martin thinks we need to chuck out Fernando Alonso.”

Brundle replied: “I knew you’d go there! You’re right, that’s what I said, isn’t it?

“But that’s not what I really mean, because I said we love having him around. But if I was the team, I’d be rebuilding the driver pairing, ready for the next phase.”

Rosberg disagreed with Brundle’s suggestion of moving on from Alonso, but noted Aston Martin’s predicament given it is unlikely Stroll, the 27-year-old son of team owner Lawrence Stroll, will be moved on by the team.

“I don’t agree with that because Fernando, if you compare him to Lance Stroll, he’s still driving really well, he’s dominating Lance all the time in every single session,” Rosberg said.

“And let’s remember, Lance, when he has a good car, can get into the top six. He’s a decent driver. So I think that’s still quite an okay benchmark for us.

“The problem that Aston has is that they cannot keep Fernando and put in a young new superstar alongside him, because Lance is obviously set there. That’s kind of the conundrum that they have.”

“It’s not all Lance’s fault because they’re both going through a horrid, horrid time, especially with the Honda Power unit, which is failing the team and the drivers at the same time,” former F1 driver Johnny Herbert said, per CasinoHawks.

“Honda have changed their engine development leader. And they’re trying to then restructure the Honda racing organisation to get themselves in a better position.

“The power unit itself is such an anchor on the car. From what I’m told and see, the car itself is not too bad. It’s very good on high-speed corners.

“The car does seem to have the right elements, but the power unit is just so bad at the moment.

“And I think with all the data that they might be able to hoard during a race weekend really is totally irrelevant because the engine is so far off.”

There have been minimal driver changes announced in a quiet ‘silly season’ by F1 standards.

Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen have signed long term contract extensions at McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull, respectively.

One driver change that is set to occur is Esteban Ocon’s imminent departure from Haas expected to be confirmed before the end of the season.
