A woman has been arrested and charged in Mildura after police intercepted an illegal drug importation en route to the regional Victorian city.

Victoria Police allege the 33-year-old attempted to import about 500ml of 1,4-Butanediol, also known as bute, which Australian Federal Police describe as “a harmful substance that is linked to sexual assaults and overdoses”.

The woman’s arrest was part of a multi-agency investigation, with Australian Border Force intercepting the drugs at Melbourne Airport in June.

Detectives from the Mildura Divisional Response Unit arrested the woman at a Mildura address on Friday morning.

She was charged with the Commonwealth offence of importing a marketable quantity of a border-controlled substance.

She has been remanded to appear before the Mildura Magistrates Court on December 16.
