Since his move to the Dallas Mavericks, Irving has made it to the NBA Finals once, but aside from that his time with the team has been largely unsuccessful.
Last season, he was out due to an ACL injury, but with his return, rumours are swirling that the player could be on his way out of Dallas.
MacMahon details why Mavs and Irving would separate
Irving moved to the Mavs in 2023, and after a poor first season, he and the Mavs bounced back to make a trip to the NBA Finals in 2024.
However, since then it has been a series of injuries that has kept Irving out of action.
With him desperate for another championship, MacMahon believes the circumstances the Mavs are currently in could lead Irving to look for a way out.
“Question that’s being asked around the league is…how long is this fit with Kyrie and the Mavericks. And it’s not because the Mavericks don’t love Kyrie. They do. It’s not because Kyrie doesn’t love Dallas and hasn’t enjoyed his experience there,” said MacMahon.
“They’re building around a 19-year-old prodigy in Cooper Flagg.
“So could there come a time when it makes sense for both sides to find a contender for Kyrie to go to? These are the kind of things that people around the league will be monitoring leading up to the trade deadline”

Irving averaged 24.7 points the last time he played for the Mavericks. He certainly could lose some of his lateral quickness due to the ACL injury, but the skill level is what separates him from the others.
The Flagg-Irving combo would have been great for the Mavs, but the latter is in the twilight years of his career and would want to be with a contender, which the Mavs are currently not.
