ZAGREB, 25 September 2026 – People across Croatia will have the chance to see September’s full moon on Saturday evening, with the Moon reaching its full phase at around 6:49pm local time.
The September full moon is traditionally known as the Harvest Moon, a name associated with the period when farmers historically relied on bright moonlight to continue working after sunset during the harvest season.
Astronomical calculations for Zagreb put the exact full-moon phase at approximately 18:49 on Saturday, 26 September.
The Moon will of course be visible before and after the exact moment of the full phase, meaning observers do not need to be outside precisely at 18:49 to see it.
The full moon is one of the easiest astronomical events to observe without specialist equipment.
For the best experience, observers generally look for an open location with an unobstructed view of the eastern horizon around moonrise and then follow the Moon as it climbs higher into the sky.
The event comes shortly after the autumn equinox, which occurred earlier this week and marked the beginning of astronomical autumn in the Northern Hemisphere.
The name “Harvest Moon” is not necessarily tied to the Moon being physically larger than other full moons. Its significance comes primarily from its position in the annual lunar calendar and its traditional connection with harvesting.
The Moon will also appear particularly striking around the time it rises because of the familiar visual effect that can make a low Moon appear larger or more colourful against the horizon.
No special equipment is required to enjoy the event. Binoculars can reveal additional lunar detail, while a telescope will provide a much closer view of the Moon’s surface.
For photographers, the period around moonrise can also provide opportunities to capture the Moon alongside buildings, landscapes and other landmarks.
With clear skies expected to develop in many parts of Croatia following Friday’s unsettled weather, Saturday evening could provide favourable conditions in parts of the country.
