A high school football game on Friday was delayed and evacuated in what Raleigh police had described as an “argument.”
During a highly anticipated football game between Rolesville High School and Millbrook High School in Raleigh, officials temporarily suspended the game and told spectators to move away from an area behind the end zone.
Officials eventually suspended the game with 8:16 remaining at the direction of the Raleigh Police Department.
WRAL’s Pat Welter, who was at the game for Football Friday’s Game of the Week, heard reports that a fight was what led to the evacuation. While it is unclear what specifically happened, police described the situation as “an argument.”
Authorities allowed the game to resume without fans after a roughly 25-minute delay. About 6,000 people attended the game.
Ahead of the game, Millbrook High School asked people to enter through the main gates and be screened by metal detectors.
The game was suspended a second time in overtime, and officials said it would finish at a later date. The score was tied at 10-10 in overtime when it was suspended again. Both schools declined to comment on the situation.
