Taylor Swift is going to be receiving a special award at the 2026 MTV VMAs and the show’s producer is opening up about the honor.

The 36-year-old singer is being honored during the event with the first-ever Artist Director Honors, which makes her the most-awards artist in VMA history with 31 wins.

The new award recognizes music artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music videos and advanced visual storytelling. The new Artist Director Honors celebrates a sustained and influential body of work from artists who have pushed creative boundaries and developed a distinct voice as directors. Taylor is a seven-time Best Director nominee at the VMAs and has won the category four times.

Executive producer Bruce Gillmer implied in an AP Entertainment interview that MTV didn’t come up with the idea for the award.

He said, “The Artist Director Honor really is an extension of the [Video] Vanguard [Award]. And in many ways, even larger in stature because it was an idea that, quite frankly, the kernel of the idea came from external. I’ll leave it at that.”

Whether the idea came from suggestions from fans, figures in the music industry, or from Taylor‘s team, we’ll likely never find out, but the comment has people speculating on social media.

“Across her work, Swift has brought an increasingly expansive approach to storytelling, creating interconnected narratives, cinematic worlds and recurring details that invite audiences deeper into each project,” MTV said in a statement. “The inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors recognizes that body of work, while also underscoring the growing role artists play in shaping how their music is brought to life on screen.”

When & How to Watch the 2026 MTV VMAs

The 2026 MTV VMAs will air live from Los Angeles on Sunday (September 27) from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. ET on CBS. The show will also be simulcast on MTV and will stream live for Paramount+ Premium subscribers in the United States.

Snoop Dogg is hosting the ceremony, while Madonna is set to open the show with her first VMA performance in 23 years.
