Jake Kolodjashnij has been medically retired from AFL football after 209 games, with the premiership defender saying he feels lucky and grateful for his career despite its cruel end.
This masthead reported on Monday that Kolodjashnij, 31, had undergone a series of fresh neuropsychology assessments since his secret concussion waiver was revealed last month.
Kolodjashnij recognised the club and the friendships he has made since he was taken with pick 41 in the 2013 national draft.
“I am so grateful for the many fond relationships and memories the Geelong Football Club has provided me,” Kolodjashnij said.
“Football has been such a significant part of my life. I feel lucky to have shared it with some of my closest friends, and to have had the on-field success that we had during my time at the Club.”
Kolodjashnij did not appear at either level for Geelong after this masthead revealed in August he signed a voluntary assumption of risk document outside his standard AFL playing contract when he last re-signed in 2024.
The Cats were subsequently fined $140,000 by the AFL.
Kolodjashnij reached his 200-game milestone this year after a 2025 season cruelled by hip, groin and back setbacks.
The 2022 premiership player was celebrated by his teammates for his selflessness over the past two months in particular as his playing future hung in the balance.
Kolodjashnij’s twin brother, Kade, retired at the end of 2020 due to concussion related issues.
Geelong football boss Andrew Mackie lauded Kolodjashnij’s impact on and off the field.
“Jake’s contribution to our football club extends far beyond his impact on the field,” Mackie said.
“He earned enormous respect through the way he approached his football, the care he showed for his teammates and his unwavering team-first attitude.
“Jake built a reputation as one of the competition’s most reliable defenders, his coaches and teammates had complete confidence he would take on whatever role was required and get the job done.
“His career has been defined by consistency, resilience and selflessness. The determination and professionalism he displayed throughout his journey are qualities that made him such a valued teammate and person within our football club.
“Jake should be incredibly proud of everything he has achieved across his career, as we certainly are.
“On behalf of everyone at the Geelong Football Club, we thank Jake for his contribution and wish him, Amelia and Leni all the very best for the future. They will always be a valued part of the Geelong Cats family.”
Kolodjashni’s retirement comes after veteran Rhys Stanley called time on his career last week.
Joint Liston Trophy winner George Stevens, defender Jed Bews and untried swingman Keighton Matofai-Forbes have been delisted.
Midfielders Jack Bowes and Mitch Knevitt, and uncapped forward-ruck Jacob Molier remain uncontracted beyond 2026.
