Team USA have not won a Ryder Cup outside of America since 1993, and incredibly, the Europeans have triumphed in 11 of the last 15 editions of the competition.
The Americans’ incredible performances during the Sunday singles at both the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup continue to paper over the cracks.
However, there are serious issues in the US set-up which need addressing urgently.
Now Rich Beem has offered his take on how he believes the United States should approach selecting their vice-captains for team events in the future.
Rich Beem wants MLB legend to be USA’s Ryder Cup vice-captain in 2027
Next year’s Ryder Cup will be a crucial one for the United States, and Beem wants to see a huge change made heading into the event.
Beem suggested who he would like to see in the vice-captain role at Adare Manor next year, while speaking on the Sky Sports Golf Podcast.
“You know, I was just thinking, somebody asked me this question. Somebody asked me, you know, ‘who would you pick as your vice captains’? I said, ‘I’d pick people outside of the game of golf’,“ Beem said.
“I’d pick athletes, great athletes, from other walks of life. I would pick Greg Maddux. Greg Maddux is probably one of the greatest pitchers of all time.
“He had such a knowledge, an encyclopedic knowledge of batters and situations from years and months gone by.
“I would pick a guy that, that the players know, and the players respect.“
Who is MLB legend Greg Maddux?
The 60-year-old MLB legend was born in San Angelo, Texas, in 1966.
Maddux played for a variety of teams including the Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
He won the World Series with the Braves in 1995 and was the only pitcher in MLB history to win a minimum of 15 games for 17 straight seasons.
Greg Maddux is 8th on the all-time career wins list with 355 to his name.
He was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014 and is widely considered to be one of the greatest pitchers in MLB history.
