Tasmania Fire Service crews have rushed to extinguish a fire at the Glenorchy tip in Hobart’s northern suburbs tonight.

The fire at the Jackson Street Waste Management Centre on Jackson Street was reported shortly after 9pm.

Police say the fire, which reportedly consisted of a pile of mattresses, is being treated as suspicious.

Large flames were visible across Hobart’s northern suburbs, while a smoke alert was issued for the area.

The fire service said there was no threat to the general public, but people who did not need to be in the immediate area should stay away.

“If you are in the immediate area, you can avoid exposure to smoke by staying indoors, closing windows, vents and doors and turning heat pumps and air conditioners to recirculate or off,” the fire service said.
