Joining the Heat gives Hardaway the chance to represent his hometown while adding his own chapter to a familiar family legacy.
For Tim Hardaway Jr., one of the best parts of joining the Miami Heat is something pretty simple: he gets to stay.
After years of returning home only to pack up and leave again, Hardaway can finally settle into a routine that keeps him in Miami throughout the season.
“I don’t have to pack and go somewhere else,” Hardaway said. “I get to stay home, sleep in my own bed, get to wake up in the morning, grab my cold brew and go to work.”
That alone would make this homecoming special. But when Hardaway walks into the arena, there’s another reminder of what playing here means to him.
His father’s No. 10 hangs above the court.
“It’s an honor. It’s a privilege,” Hardaway said. “It gives me the utmost confidence, even when I was on the opposing team, to step into this arena and play under that jersey that was hanging.”
Now he gets to do it in a Heat uniform.
A family connection that never left
Hardaway said the significance of his father’s retired jersey has been on his mind throughout his playing career, well before the opportunity to join Miami arrived.
As a visiting player, it was already a source of confidence. Being part of the organization himself gives that connection a different meaning.
“So just being a part of this now and representing it to the best of my ability is all that he asked for,” Hardaway said. “And that’s what I’m giving.”
The move is something both father and son had wanted.
“He’s been wanting me to be here for a very long time,” Hardaway said. “So has myself.”
“We are here now. The stars are aligned, and now we are ready to get this show on the road.”
For Hardaway, who played at Miami Palmetto Senior High School, the connection to the city includes his own basketball beginnings as well as his father’s career. Joining the Heat brings those parts of his life together.
Learning the game at home
Some of Hardaway’s memories of watching his father compete go beyond what happened on the court.
He recalled the seriousness around the house before games, when the upcoming matchup left little room for conversation.
“I do remember the night before and the day of at home, there wasn’t a lot of talking,” he said. “It was all business. It was all seriousness.”
Those experiences helped shape his love for basketball. But the lesson his father emphasizes now balances that competitiveness with something easier to lose sight of during a long NBA career.
“Having complete confidence in myself, but also having fun,” Hardaway said when asked what his father had instilled in him.
“He preaches that three-letter word more than anything.”
“As long as you have fun and you’re out there enjoying your time, everything else will take care of itself because this doesn’t last very long.”
Ready to contribute
Hardaway’s excitement about being home comes with an understanding that there’s work ahead.
Asked about his role and the competition for opportunities, he pointed to training camp as the time to sort those things out. He has handled different assignments throughout his career and expressed a willingness to embrace what Miami needs.
The expectations around the team are clear to him.
“The expectations are high, but the egos are set aside,” Hardaway said.
For now, he gets to approach that challenge in a place that already means so much to his family. The jersey in the rafters represents what his father accomplished here. Hardaway’s opportunity is to contribute to what comes next.
“It’s exciting,” he said, “and I’m honored to be here.”
