Avengers: Endgame has powered its way back to the top spot on the all-time global box office chart.
From the second weekend of Disney‘s Avengers Endgame: Encore rerelease that is timed to drum up excitement for this year’s Avengers: Doomsday, the 2019 superhero blockbuster collected $4.4 million domestically and $14.4 million overseas. This brought the overall global sum for Avengers: Endgame to $2.9255 billion, barely enough to surpass Avatar‘s total of $2.9237 billion.
After hitting theaters from Twentieth Century Fox in 2009, James Cameron‘s Avatar held the crown for a decade as the highest-grossing movie of all time globally until Avengers: Endgame moved past it in 2019. Two years later, Avatar reclaimed the crown with its rerelease ahead of the 2022 sequel Avatar: The Way of Water.
Last weekend, Endgame: Encore’s $86 million global haul made it the No. 2 worldwide rerelease ever, behind only 2012’s Titanic 3D rerelease. Endgame: Encore took the top spot at the domestic box office in its first frame with $26 million, landing on top of last weekend’s crowded marketplace that included such fellow newcomers as Paramount’s Brad Pitt-led Heart of the Beast, A24’s Robert Pattinson-starring Primetime and DreamWorks Animation’s Forgotten Island.
Anthony Russo and Joe Russo helmed Avengers: Endgame, which hails from Marvel Studios and sees its superheroes dealing with Thanos having erased half of the universe’s inhabitants. The star-studded cast included Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner.
The success for the rerelease is a promising sign for the big-budget Doomsday. The Russo brothers return to helm the forthcoming MCU movie that hits theaters Dec. 18, the same day as Warner Bros.’ similarly buzzy Dune: Part Three.
