Four teenagers and two men were hauled to the ground and arrested on a major Melbourne freeway after an early-morning home invasion sparked a dramatic police pursuit across the city.

All outbound lanes on the Monash Freeway at Warrigal Road were closed about midday on Tuesday after a stolen car was seen driving erratically.

Images of the scene show people lying face down on the bitumen, with police detectives and heavily armed officers from Victoria Police’s special operations group shown surrounding them, along with marked and unmarked police cars around the stolen vehicle.

Four teenage boys aged from 16 to 17, and two men aged 19 and 20, were taken into custody to be interviewed by detectives. Police have not yet charged them.

Several hours earlier, police were called to reports of an aggravated burglary at a property in Clonaig Street, Brighton East, just after 5.30am.

Police said an occupant woke to the sound of noises inside the home before offenders stole two cars, a Nissan and an Audi, and fled.

The vehicles were involved in another home invasion in Hampton Park after 7.45am, police allege.

“Officers spotted the Nissan Patrol being driven erratically in Doveton about 8am, before engaging in a pursuit,” police said in a statement.

“With the assistance of the police air wing, the vehicle was followed through multiple eastern and south-eastern suburbs on Eastlink and the Monash Freeway.”

The Nissan was intercepted in Chadstone on the Monash Freeway just after midday, police said.

Police said no one was injured during the incident, and the second stolen vehicle was recovered after a collision in Endeavour Hills.

Traffic on the Monash is being diverted onto Toorak and Burke roads. Drivers can re-enter the freeway on Dandenong and Wellington roads.
