Now, the 17-year-old, who recently committed to Duke University, is set to step onto the court against the Brisbane Bullets, with eyes from around the world watching one of Australia’s brightest young basketball talents.

For Paul, who is still just a kid with an incredibly bright future ahead of him, the spotlight has been firmly on him since he was unveiled as an NBL Next Star during HoopsFest in January.
The pressure and expectations surrounding a young player of his calibre might be too much for some, but according to two-time Emmy Award-winning reporter Ariana Prather, this is exactly the type of opportunity Paul needs to prove himself.

“This is the kind of opportunity you want as a young hooper who is preparing to make a huge leap into ACC collegiate basketball,” Prather said.
“I’ve played at Duke and Cameron indoor stadium is very similar to the Cairns convention centre.
“It’s loud, it’s close knit you will hear the love and the trash talk from all the fans and you will either sink or swim under the bright lights.”

Paul has not stepped onto the court professionally since representing Australia at the FIBA U17 World Cup in Türkiye in late June.
The talented guard helped guide Australia to a bronze medal, averaging an impressive 15.3 points, 6.4 rebounds and 7.1 assists per game.
However, he also averaged 4.7 turnovers, an area of his game that will only improve as he continues to develop and gain experience against higher-level competition.

For Prather, the opportunity to play against grown men before taking his talents to Duke is a rare and valuable experience, one that could play a significant role in building Paul’s confidence and preparing him for the next chapter of his basketball journey.
“Him having the opportunity to play for the Taipans before going to Duke is incredible to be able to build his confidence and play against grown men, and show his ability to produce under pressure,” she said.
“He is a quick, dynamic, well rounded guard and his minutes will most likely be limited. He will have to immediately show what he can do to fight for more playing time.

“That’s what the Next Star program does, not only does it prepare these young athletes to take their game to the next level physically but also mentally gets them ready to handle the fame associated with being a young star.
“He looks ready and primed. I’m very excited to meet him and watch him courtside as he steps onto the NBL floor for the first time tonight.”
The Cairns Taipans have confirmed that Paul will make his debut tonight, although it remains unclear how many minutes the 17-year-old will play after spending several weeks on the sidelines.
Regardless of how much court time he receives, it marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the NBL Next Star and future Duke guard.
With the basketball world watching, Paul will finally get his first taste of professional basketball against grown men, taking the first step in what many believe could be a long and successful career.
And if the hype surrounding the 17-year-old is anything to go by, this could be the beginning of something special.
