COLLEGE PARK, Md. —
The University of Maryland suspended its club tennis team after emails surfaced showing “racist imagery,” WRC-TV reports.
WRC-TV, WBAL-TV’s sister station in Washington, reported that the club team is suspended after some members sent the emails to other university tennis clubs ahead of this weekend’s fall tournament at College Park.
University officials learned of the messages on Saturday, saying the emails contained “programming material with a graphic containing racist imagery” that targeted people who are Black or African American, the university said in a statement.
While some members of the club tennis team sent the messages, the university said the entire team is suspended indefinitely, pending an investigation by the Office of Student Conduct.
WRC reported that the team forfeited its matches in the fall tournament, which will go on as scheduled. An apology email was sent to the other teams, saying, in part: “The University of Maryland is horrified and expresses its regret and sincere apology for the harm that this has caused.”
The incident has been referred to the university’s police department.
