JD Vance has hinted he was in disagreement with Donald Trump over the highly controversial Iran fiasco, urging one of the war’s loudest right-wing critics against abandoning the president.

During a recent interview with former White House spokesman Sean Spicer, Vance carefully signalled he was not in agreement with Trump on certain issues that have split MAGA down the middle.

It came as new developments in the AI safety space attracted major attention across the globe. After weeks of concerning new releases on the situation unfolding inside “frontier” AI labs, Anthropic has made a move. But not everyone is happy.

The company behind the extremely successful Claude AI assistant has now supplied its own draft of the rule book that aims to “pace the frontier” and stop a potentially catastrophic superintelligence incident.

Under the draft the government could seek to block a model’s release or use if it posed a foreseeable, imminent risk of killing or seriously injuring more than 50 people, or causing more than US$1 billion ($1.44 billion) in damage.

The move has predictably lit a fire under certain safety campaigners, who disagree with the premise that the industry should recommend its own regulations.
