VOLATILE BILLS STAR EJECTED

Bills defensive back CJ Gardner Johnson is facing a suspension from the NFL after he was ejected for spitting in the direction of a Las Vegas Raiders player.

Gardner-Johnson always plays with an edge and is no stranger to controversy, but this latest incident could spell the end of the veteran’s Bills stint.

In the first half of Buffalo’s 33-30 win over Las Vegas, CBS cameras captured Gardner-Johnson spitting towards Raiders star Brock Bowers after the tight end turned his back.

The safety was then given his marching orders by the match officials.

“You can’t do this. It’s childish, immature and it’s unprofessional,” former wide receiver Nate Burleson said on CBS.

Gardner-Johnson apologised to his teammates in a post-match press conference in the Buffalo locker room.

“I let my emotions get above me and I hurt my team. I’ve got to do better,” he said.

Despite the unneccesary setback for the Bills’ defence, quarterback Josh Allen’s big day helped improve Buffalo’s record to 5-1.

Allen threw for 255 yards and two touchdowns, including an incredible flck pass to Keon Coleman with six Raiders defenders converging in on him.

Coleman finished with four catches and 59 yards as the Bills recorded at least 33 points for the fourth time this season.

RAMS KICKING CHAOS CONTINUES AS SEASON GOES FROM BAD TO WORSE

For a few glorious moments Sunday afternoon, the Los Angeles Rams thought Matthew Stafford had saved their season.

The veteran quarterback had engineered a remarkable fourth-quarter comeback, punter and fill-in placekicker Ethan Evans had somehow converted the go-ahead extra point, and the Rams were able to celebrate an improbably win

There was just one problem. The Rams left too much time on the clock.

And because apparently no Los Angeles football disaster is complete without one final twist of the knife, Arizona Cardinals kicker Chad Ryland drilled a 43-yard field goal as time expired, delivering a stunning 18-16 victory that sent the Rams tumbling into last place in the NFC West.

For the second consecutive week, Los Angeles watched an opponent celebrate a walk-off victory while Stafford and his teammates were left wondering how another winnable game had slipped through their fingers.

The Rams are 2-4, and the wheels haven’t just fallen off their Super Bowl bandwagon. They’re scattered somewhere along the 405 freeway near LAX.

What began as a season overflowing with championship expectations has deteriorated into an increasingly embarrassing collection of penalties, turnovers, special teams disasters and questionable decisions.

Sunday offered the entire miserable assortment.

It started off well enough when newly signed kicker Blake Grupe slotted a 43-yard field goal.

Seconds later, the nightmare began.

On the ensuing kickoff, Arizona returner Devin Duvernay broke through Los Angeles’ coverage, leaving the 5-foot-7, 150-pound Grupe as the last defender between him and the end zone.

Grupe made the touchdown-saving tackle but injured his knee, leaving the Rams without their kicker for the remainder of the game.

For the second consecutive week, Los Angeles’ kickoff coverage was so dreadful that its kicker was forced to make a desperation tackle. On Monday, it was Ethan Evans against Buffalo. This time, the consequences were even worse.

Without Grupe, Sean McVay was forced to abandon conventional kicking decisions, turning routine scoring opportunities into fourth-down gambles.

Grupe took the place of the recently cut Harrison Mavis, who had an awful night in an overtime loss to Buffalo last week.

Now, the Rams are likely on the hunt for a new kicker and a season on the brink of collapse.

DISCARDED FIRST ROUND PICK’S HISTORIC DAY

Tyler Shough threw for 144 yards and three touchdowns to spark New Orleans to a 34-27 road victory over the New York Giants.

In a topsy-turvy match, the Saints gave up a 10-lead before scoring 34 consecutive points in a savage turnaround, before the Giants threatened to pinch it back late.

The fightback came after Giants coach John Harbaugh brutally replaced quarterback Jameis Winston with JJ McCarthy, with the move paying dividends as McCarthy threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Likely to briefly threaten to pull off the impossible.

McCarthy gave the Giants the shot in the arm they needed.

The former first round pick by the Vikings, McCarthy was making his first appearance for his new side after being traded by Minnesota.

McCarthy helped cut the deficit from 24 to seven, throwing for a whopping 243 yards in the fourth quarter alone.

The Giants were deep in Saints territory and with a chance to tie the game but McCarthy’s fourth down pass to Likely was broken up, sealing a New Orleans victory.

243 yards is the second-most passing yards in a fourth quarter by any QB who did not start over the last 25 seasons.

Winston had thrown 14 of 26 completed passes, including a touchdown pass, before being removed.

The quarterback change follows first-choice QB Jaxson Dart’s season-ending knee injury against the LA Rams in Week 2.

Meanwhile, in England, the Houston Texans snatched a 34-31 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the final seconds of regulation time after a 49-yard field goal from Ka’imi Fairbairn.

The game featured chaos in the opening seconds, with umpire Larry Smith carted off Wembley Stadium after sustaining a leg injury while slipping on the grass.

The middle school principal was attended to by both team’s trainers, with the match officiated by a six-person officiating crew rather than the usual seven.

12-YEAR FIRST FOR NFL BATTLER IN OVERTIME EPIC

Andre Szmyt’s 37-yard field goal on Sunday’s final play gave Cleveland a 13-10 NFL victory over Baltimore and the AFC North division lead for the first time this late in a season since 2014.

Szmyt, who missed from 48 yards minutes before, delivered a kick that left both clubs 4-2 but the Browns atop the division on tie-breakers.

The Ravens, without injured star quarterback Lamar Jackson, played for the first time against Browns coach Todd Monken, who served as Baltimore’s offensive coordinator the past three seasons.

Tyler Huntley flipped a two-yard touchdown pass to Josh Cuevas on the game’s opening drive and Tyler Loop added a 34-yard field goal to give Baltimore a 10-0 halftime lead.

The Browns, missing top rusher Quinshon Judkins with an ankle injury, answered on a 48-yard Szmyt field goal and Audric Estime’s two-yard touchdown run to equalise with 8:33 remaining.

At London, Ka’imi Fairbairn kicked a 49-yard field goal on the last play to give the Houston Texans a 34-31 victory over Jacksonville.

C.J. Stroud completed 24-of-34 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns as Houston improved to 2-4 while dropping the Jaguars to 4-2.

“We played well as an offence and came out with the W so we’ll be happy on the way back home,” said Stroud.

“I just felt good. I feel in rhythm and I’m having fun. It was really a team effort.”

Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence threw for 306 yards and four touchdowns in a losing cause.

Jaguars two-way star Travis Hunter made an interception and three tackles plus four catches for 59 yards and a touchdown – the first player since 2002 with a pickoff and touchdown grab in one game.

At Tampa Bay, Aaron Rodgers flipped a six-yard touchdown pass to Germie Bernard in overtime to give Pittsburgh a 26-19 victory over the Buccaneers.

Rodgers threw for 253 yards and two touchdowns as the Steelers matched division-leader Cleveland and the Ravens at 4-2.

‘AWESOME BEING BACK’: BEARS STAR RETURNS IN STYLE

Chicago’s Caleb Williams, who missed the past three games with a hamstring injury, completed 30-of-36 passes for 305 yards and a touchdown and D’Andre Swift ran for two touchdowns in the Bears’ 31-23 triumph at Atlanta.

“It’s awesome being back,” said Williams.

“After the long weeks trying to get back out here, the emotions took over. Then it was getting back to having a level head and being in control of myself for the guys.”

Falcons rookie linebacker Kendal Daniels suffered a severe injury when tackling Bears tight end Colston Loveland, his face mask slamming into Loveland’s knee.

Daniels was down on the field for several minutes before being put onto a stretcher with his neck braced and taken off on a cart.

The team announced he was alert and had movement in all his extremities as he was taken to a hospital for more evaluation.

At New England, Drake Maye threw for 235 yards and three touchdowns to give the host Patriots a 26-19 victory over the New York Jets.

Joey Slye kicked field goals from 44 and 49 yards in the last 2:03 as previously winless Tennessee beat host Indianapolis 26-20.

EAGLES’ LOSING STREAK WORSENS

The injury-riddled Philadelphia Eagles have lost a fourth game in a row, as life without Jalen Hurts began in ugly fashion against the Carolina Panthers.

With the star quarterback on the sidelines for at least four games with a blood clot in his calf, the Eagles, who are also without Saquon Barkley, Will Shipley and Tank Bigsby in a savage blow to their running back stocks, are facing having their season over before it had truly begun.

Replacement QB Tanner McKee threw a 19-yard touchdown to DeVonta Smith to draw the margin back to 19-14, but that was as good as his day got, with just 26 of 45 passes completed.

Just minutes after the touchdown, he lost 12 yards on a fumble to spurn a drive and a chance to take the game off the Panthers.
