When the past is the present — at the expense of the future
Critically acclaimed and one of the most popular boxing video game series of all time, “Fight Night” debuted in 2004 and released new versions yearly until 2006 and then issued updated versions in 2009 and again in 2011.
In its final 2011 version, entitled “Fight Night Champion,” the game featured 54 past boxing legends and then-current top contenders, later expanded to 85 via a downloadable expansion pack.
Playable characters spanned the weight classes from heavyweights (Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Joe Frazier, Lennox Lewis, both Brothers Klitschko, etc.) to light heavyweights and middleweight (Roy Jones Jr., Bernard Hopkins, Sugar Ray Robinson, Jake LaMotta, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Carlos Monzon and more).
The game also covered lightweights and welterweights, including Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran, Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, Julio César Chávez, Pernell Whitaker and lower-weight-class competitors such as Nonito Donaire, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Diego Corrales, Kevin Kelley, etc.
EA Sports shifted the sole focus of its fighting-game franchises to the mixed martial arts-based “EA Sports UFC” series from 2014 to the present, although the game has featured modern and legendary boxers such as Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, Mike Tyson and Ali as playable characters.
Thus far, there has been no announcement of an official release date or further game specifics.
