Both Ride to Work Day and the United Energy Around the Bay made for a busy week for riders last week and not only on the pedals.
Both events saw Gimme 5! Campaign volunteers sharing details of the campaign with participants and an uptick in emails sent to state election candidates. The campaign keeps the momentum going this week with rides and meetings in the electorates of both Caulfield and Albert Park.
The Gimme 5! Campaign asks for 5% of Victoria’s transport budget to be spent on developing the strategic cycling corridor network and has seen residents from across Melbourne and regional Victoria email their candidates to ask them to commit.

On Saturday 24th October Glen Eira BUG are hosting a family-friendly community ride exploring some local bike routes—and the gaps—in the Caulfield electorate. You can find all the details here so that you can join them.
Sunday October 25th sees Port Phillip BUG hosting a community ride exploring the improvements needed around Lorimer Street to make it a safer route for people on bikes. Register to join the ride here.
On Sunday afternoon a community meeting held at St Kilda Library will give community groups and residents from both the Port Phillip and Caulfield electorates the chance to share their stories about the need for dedicated funding for safe cycling infrastructure. State election candidates have been invited to come and listen and provide a brief response so make sure you grab the family and come along! You can register and find all the details online at : Gimme 5! For happy healthy kids – Albert Park & Caulfield electorates
Bicycle Network CEO Alison McCormack is attending all events and continuing to meet state election candidates so NOW is the perfect time to send that email so that all candidates understand the importance of providing dedicated funding for safer ways for people to get around!
There is no dedicated budget for building the SCC network, even though the Victorian Government wants 25% of all trips to be active by 2030 and roughly 75% of Victorians report being interested in riding, with the biggest barrier to uptake being a lack of protected infrastructure.
You can explore your local Strategic Cycling Corridors and their current state and the rest of the Gimme 5! campaign at Gimme5.org and view the full Gimme 5 roadshow schedule at https://gimme5.org/roadshow.
